Tight Lines have been on a bit of mad one recently; having seen BadBadNotGood, James Blake, Jordan Rakei, White Denim, Samiyam and SumoChief all in the last month we decided to end our spectator’s tour with The Robert Glasper Experiment at Band on the Wall Manchester.
In Glasper’s September release, “ArtScience” you’ll hear face-melting shredding from new appointment Michael Severson, the familiar sound of long-time collaborator Casey Benjamin’s vocoder, trappy drum machine and pulled back filth from drummer Mark Colenburg, the prolific Derrick Hodge on bass and obviously Glasper on keys with some mad Jazzy chops yet still rooted in that gospel sound.
It’s a pretty bangin’ album with loads of different shit going on so we were buzzin’ to see it all live. With rumours of Chris Dave making an appearance we all got giddy, squeezed into the Corsa and bezzed down to Manc.
Although it wasn’t “Daddy” Dave on drums we were not disappointed…The first half of the show was dedicated to ArtScience material. It was evident that although the musicianship employed is undeniably absolutely fucking unbelievable, the music is quite different from the Glasper of old and the audience weren’t vibing quite as much as when I saw him touring Black Radio.
With musicians walking on and off the stage at different intervals, Glasper alternating between Rhodes, keys and synth, Benjamin going from vocoder to alto sax to soprano it was an ever-changing and exciting spectacle. Solos from all musicians were spread out through the set leaving audience members gob-smacked on every occasion.
Glasper moves on to some older material which rouses the audience. Glasper covers The Police’s “Roxanne” which gets everybody singing along. For the encore Glasper does a solo piano version of Body and Soul before going full Dilla, dropping “The Look of Love”, allowing Colenburg to lay down some of the fattest beats man will here. They ended the set with an epic version of Black Radio’s “Dillalude #2”.
